When her three-month-old daughter Sophie is diagnosed with a rare seizure disorder, Elizabeth Aquino and her husband, Michael, are thrust into a nightmarish world of impossible decisions, toxic drug cocktails, and talk of brain surgery on their tiny child. As they grapple with the harrowing progression of their child's seizures, they grow to understand that the doctors know little more about how to heal Sophie than they do. They are in a terrifying no-man's-land. This narrative of unintended medical trauma and the search for healing through alternative means will sear you with its stubborn hope, unexpected grace, and abiding love.

Elizabeth Aquino lives in Los Angeles with her family. Always a writer but trained as a pastry chef, her life took an entirely unexpected turn when her first child was diagnosed with a devastating seizure disorder; her daughter became her greatest inspiration as they navigated the systems of care for the disabled and sick. Elizabeth's work has been published in numerous literary magazines, newspapers, and anthologies, including the A Cup of Comfort series, qarrtsiluni, Kicking in the Wall, My Baby Rides the Short Bus, The Mom Egg, Spirituality and Health magazine, and the Los Angeles Times. When she isn't writing she spends her time as an advocate for children with special health-care needs, operates a home-based cake and pastry business, and acts as chauffeur to and devoted admirer of her two teenage boys.

This is a short audiobook published by Shebooks - high quality fiction, memoir, and journalism for women, by women.

Elizabeth Aquino tells the story of having a daughter diagnosed with a severe and rare seizure disorder. She begins from the very beginning and talks about the hopes and fears of all young mothers. Very early on, she has to face not only her daughter's difficult condition, but the complicated world of multiple specialists who aren't always able to hold an answer out to her that helps her make sense of what is happening to her daughter. She tells this part of her story with breath-taking honesty and grace. The writing is riveting and the story told in a way that you are drawn into the world Elizabeth and her family live in. It is an enlightening book in every sense. You will come away from this with a deeper sense of the fragility and utter beauty of life. Elizabeth's writing provokes a sense of the life inside all of us, seen maybe in ways you hadn't considered before. This is the most life-enhancing book I've read in a long time and I read a lot. It's that good. I personally think everyone would benefit from reading this book, for the story, for the luminous prose, and for the shining sense of hope that is contained in this small volume. I hope Elizabeth publishes more.

Hope for a Sea Change A Search for Healing (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Aquino Tiffany Morgan Audible Studios Books Reviews

Elizabeth Aquino's writing is like pure, clear light. She uses it to illuminate the story of a mother's fierce love for a child that is like no other and for whom there is often too little help to be found in within the realm of medicine. Elizabeth is frank, she is honest, she cries, she laughs, she is incredibly well self-educated in the realm of childhood epilepsy and she has gone to hell and back to try and find help for her daughter.
Finally, she has.
And she helps us all to understand that which most of us will never experience and she continues to care for her child and to help others find the help they need for their own children.
She is magnificent. So is her daughter Sophie. And so is this book.
This is a daunting, brave and strangely hopeful memoir about raising a child with a severe disability.

I am a faithful reader of Elizabeth Aquino's blog, and I have grown to love her honest, masterful writing. Google her, if you want to hear more of her story and musings.

I especially have been encouraged to hear how well Sophie, Ms. Aquino's nineteen year old daughter with a severe seizure disorder is responding to high CBD medical marijuana.

Everyone should read this...
Once you become a parent, there's no turning back, no matter how hard it gets. And with a developmental disability such as uncontrolled epilepsy, there's no sugarcoating a very tough situation. Looking to the medical experts for help and compassion, author Elizabeth Aquino and her husband find more questions than answers, and in some cases, downright rude doctors. The story is filled with the kind of detail that easily allows you to paint pictures in your mind, and to put yourself in her shoes. Read it in one long gulp, and laugh and cry along with a family that could have easily been yours.
Elizabeth Aquino writes such difficult subject matter with enormous heart, beauty, and grace. I was riveted by her story as I followed this mother's journey through the fire, from the cold streets of Manhattan all the way to sun-drenched, seaside California. This is one of those memoirs that has the power to change you. It opened my eyes and gripped my heart.
Profoundly moving. This memoir, about a mother's urgent and tireless quest to find answers for her daughter, who was diagnosed as an infant with a devastating seizure disorder, is beautifully written. The reader follows as Aquino navigates the medical world at its most cutting edge, a world, where it becomes clear, those who are supposed to know, know nothing. This is a memoir about the bottomless love of a mother for her daughter, and Sophie's soul is always present here. Beautiful Sophie with the soft curls. Beautiful Sophie who loves the sea.
Elizabeth Aquino is both poetic and pragmatic, a combination that's not always easy to pull off. The story of her daughter's diagnosis with infantile spasms at three months of age is riveting. She shares the details of those early events with a writer's precision that paints a clear portrait of their life with epilepsy, and a beautiful child named Sophie.
"She was beautiful already, with soft, curly hair and penetrating eyes, and people often remarked on how ladylike she seemed, even so young. At 18 months, she sat upright, Indianstyle, her hands soft in her lap. She appeared gentle, and we weren't sure how much of this was our projection, a way to soften the blow to our and her innocence."
Aquino's daughter is now 19 years old, and is just beginning to experience life without daily seizures thanks to medical marijuana. Hope for a Sea Change is a marvelous mini-memoir that educates and illumines.
I stumbled on this book shortly after my daughter was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy. There are few books that speak to the hell seizure parents endure but none that do it as well as Elizabeth's book. I've since become a reader of her blog elizabethaquino.blogspot.com and to say that it has given me hope and strength to parent my daughter is an understatement. Her writing is clear, beautiful and sincere and I look to her as an inspiration as a mother and writer. She's the real deal.
