For over twenty years comedy writer Bill Naylor penned scripts for many Tv and radio shows, comedy actors and comedians. Including Les Dawson, Russ Abbot, Kenny Everett and "The Two Ronnies." But he also had a parallel career working in zoos and with wildlife. Here he gives a humorous account of his experiences as a zoo man. Following in the tradition of Gerald Durrell and The James Herriot. The theme is animals behaving badly - animal people behaving madly. Encounters between exotic animals, and the dedicated, but often quirky and eccentric 'animal people' whose job it is to wait on them beak and hoof. Woven through the narrative are little known facts and first hand observations. But even the reader with only a passing interest in the creatures that flutter or slither across the pages, will still find it entertaining. This the 3rd edition, includes more stories more illustrations and more laughs.

Misadventures of a Zoo Keeper 3rd Edition Bill Naylor 9781326227838 Books

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a zookeeper. I abandoned that dream as soon as I learned how much money zookeepers make. But I still wondered if I would have had a happier life if I became a zookeeper anyway. After reading Misadventures of a Zookeeper, I wonder no more. If I had become a zookeeper I'd be even more of a mess than I am now!

This is a very funny book that not only does what it says on the tin (so to speak) but also shows you that animals are far more complex and unpredictable than we ever thought. This is written in a conversational style, such as how people speak over a few pints at the local. Americans may have a little difficulty at first getting a hang of the rhythms of native British speech but this book is well worth the effort.

The illustrations are great, too!

Misadventures of a Zoo Keeper 3rd Edition Bill Naylor 9781326227838 Books Reviews

Recent memoirs are often gloomy reading. This one bucks the trend. It's lively, compassionate, and full of quirky animals and even quirkier humans. For over 40 years the author has been involved with zoos, and some of the crazy types who run them. Like the zoo owner who releases animals to get publicity for the zoo, and devises a plan to exhibit dodos. After a series of chapters that had me laughing out loud, the author completes this delightful book, with tales of his boyhood adventures in the Lake District. An idyll of scabby knees, bird nesting, and caring for his collection of wild and exotic pets. Which his father refers to as "That bloody menagerie." For those who just want a good laugh, you won't be disappointed. If you are interested in animals, the book seamlessly mixes personal experiences and animal facts with humour. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Have you ever wondered, could my job get any worse? Bill Naylor's "Misadventures of a Zoo Keeper" pretty much answers that question for you, and the answer is, "Yes, it really, really can."

From being attacked by an amorous duck to explaining the dangers of the cassowary (yes, I had to Google what that was too), Naylor presents a world unfamiliar to most of us as he explains parts of his life as a zookeeper. With pearls of wisdom such as, "...he who hesitates gets bitten," this book flows from one hilarious story to the next. With stories that prove that truth is by far funnier than fiction, "Misadventures of a Zoo Keeper" is sure to make even the most austere person grin.

I would suggest this book not only for people who love animal stories, but for those just looking for a little bizarre humor in their everyday life.
Charming short story style chapters. Gave me plenty of respect for zookeepers in a humorous way.
As a former zoo keeper I love reading (and hearing) about other keeper's experiences. Naylor knocks it out of the park and reminds me of days gone by.

With a hilarious and, at times, self deprecating narration Mr. Naylor recounts some of his experiences working with animals. I particularly enjoyed his recounting the black swan and Muscovy duck incidents. Having had the same issue with male black swans (yes, plural) myself.

Better than any other zoo memoir I've read. Including those by Jack Hannah. I would love to see more of these by this author. Absolutely brilliant.
Disappointed with the quality of the writing. I expected more from the author. It was shallow with "typo's" on almost every page. I read this as a possible Book Club choice & could not recommend it as a selection. It was a misadventure.
